Amy Smith re-signs for two more years

Amy Smith Hurricanes announcement

Following a breakout WBBL|10 campaign, Tasmanian young gun Amy Smith has been re-signed by the Hobart Hurricanes for a further two seasons, taking her contract through to the end of WBBL|12.

Becoming the third Hurricanes player with the last name Smith to join the ‘Canes for WBBL|11, the talented leg-spinning all-rounder is pumped to be continuing her career in purple.

As the Hobart Hurricanes' youngest ever player, debuting in WBBL|06 as a 15-year-old, and one of the youngest ever players to play in the WBBL, Smith is developing into one of the Hurricanes' most important players.

After missing the start of WBBL|10 due to injury, her return to the Hurricanes XI was a welcome sight for the ‘Cane Train.

Smith took nine wickets in her eight games for the Hurricanes, with an impressive average of 14.55, and the second-best economy rate in the whole competition of 5.24 runs per over.

One of the more underrated assets of Smith’s game is her batting, and despite not being given much opportunity to bat higher in the order, she has a WNCL fifty to her name and will be looking to show the WBBL what she can do with the bat.

Smith has already played 57 games for the Hurricanes, ranking fourth all-time, and given she’s only 20, her best cricket is still ahead of her as she continues to improve and develop.

Over the past 12 months, Smith has also had opportunities at a higher level, playing matches for Australia ‘A’ against England in both the T20 and 50-over formats.

Cricket Tasmania’s High Performance General Manager, Salliann Beams, has been pleased with Smith’s development and looks forward to what she will be able to do next summer.

“Amy is an exciting prospect for us, a homegrown talent who continues to develop and impress with every opportunity."

“Her bowling in WBBL|10 was a real asset to our team, with her leg-spin not only taking wickets but also managing to keep the run rate down and putting pressure on the opposition.

“The dedication she has to training and focus on improving all aspects of her game shows just how motivated she is, and I know Amy will play a key role in us winning games in WBBL|11 and beyond,” said Beams.

Amy Smith joins Nicola Carey, Heather Graham, Ruth Johnston, Lizelle Lee, Nat Sciver-Brunt (O/S), Hayley Silver-Holmes, Lauren Smith, Linsey Smith (O/S), Molly Strano, Elyse Villani, and Danni Wyatt-Hodge (O/S) as Hurricanes players under contract for WBBL|11, with future players to be announced over the coming months.
