The Hobart Hurricanes can now confirm their full BBL|14 squad, with Jake Doran taking the Hurricanes final spot on their list.
The left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman had a strong year with the Tasmanian Tigers last season and was Tasmania’s highest run-scorer at the Top End T20 in Darwin in July.
Doran looks forward to being a part of the Hurricanes set-up again, returning to the Hurricanes squad for the first time since BBL|10.
“I am excited to play for the Hurricanes this coming year and looking forward to playing under Nathan Ellis, Jeff Vaughan, and the other players in the Hurricanes team.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to have another crack at T20 Cricket, where I believe I have developed some strong skills over the last couple of seasons.
“I have some good confidence after performing well in the Top End T20 and can’t wait to showcase that for the Hurricanes,” said Doran.
Doran, who moved to Tasmania in 2015 after signing a two-year deal with the Tigers, has played 71 First Class matches for Tasmania with four 100s, and 28 One Day Cup matches with two 100s.
His BBL debut came in 2014-15 with the Sydney Thunder, when he was the youngest ever player to sign a BBL contract, still yet to finish his Year 12 exams.
He played one match in BBL|04 and stayed on the Thunder’s list until BBL|06, where he made a further three appearances for the Thunder before signing with the Hurricanes in BBL|08.
During BBL|08, he played once for the Purple Army, followed by three games in BBL|09, and remained part of the Hurricanes squad in BBL|10 but did not feature in any matches that season.
A crafty, hard-hitting left-handed batter, Doran’s batting style is conducive to the shorter format of the game, and has come off a successful 2023-24 Australian Domestic Summer, where he scored nearly 500 runs in eight Sheffield Shield matches.
Doran will also provide a strong backup wicketkeeping option and is the first-choice wicketkeeper for the Tasmanian Tigers, and someone with great experience having captained matches for the Tigers squad at the Top End T20.
General Manager of High Performance, Salliann Beams, discussed what she thinks Doran can bring to the Hurricanes squad.
“Jake will provide great experience and strong all-round batting to our Hurricanes squad, and we saw this firsthand in the Top End T20 earlier this year.
“He has recently shown us that he can play a role in the middle order and I know he will step up for us in purple when required this season.
What particularly pleased me was how he recently dominated spin against good opposition, this is something we know we need to improve as a batting unit,” said Beams.
Doran joins Iain Carlisle, Nikhil Chaudhary, Tim David, Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Peter Hatzoglou, Shai Hope (O/S), Rishad Hossain (O/S), Caleb Jewell, Chris Jordan (O/S), Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen, Billy Stanlake, Matthew Wade, Charlie Wakim, and Mac Wright as Hurricanes players under contract ahead of BBL|14.
