The Hobart Hurricanes can proudly announce the signing of Lauren Smith to the Hurricanes WBBL squad ahead of WBBL|10.
Smith joins the Hurricanes from the Sydney Thunder, where she has played 124 matches in total for the Thunder and the Sixers, who she debuted for as a 19-year-old in WBBL|01
“I’m really excited for the opportunity to be playing in purple.
“I’ve loved my time in Tasmania for the Tigers and am looking forward to WBBL|10,” explained Smith.
Her all-round cricket ability has made her an excellent signing for the Hurricanes, considering her lower-order power hitting, talented off-spin bowling, and incredible fielding.
Smith will consistently be seen by fans throwing herself around the inner ring throughout a fielding innings, ensuring she is giving her all for the team.
As one of the only Hurricanes listed players who will have played in the WBBL since WBBL|01, the Hurricanes will use all of Smith’s experience to help the team to their first WBBL title.
During WBBL|09, Smith played nine games for the Sydney Thunder after missing their first few games of the season before playing a crucial role for the Thunder, taking 11 wickets with best figures of 3/16 to have her career-best season wickets total.
Cricket Tasmania’s High Performance General Manager, Salliann Beams, was excited about the prospect of Smith playing WBBL in purple.
“When the opportunity arose for Loz to come and play for the Hurricanes, it was an easy decision for us, she has all the skills required to succeed in WBBL cricket.
“We have seen her take down bowling attacks in the WNCL with the bat and take crucial wickets in important moments in matches, so we are sure this will translate in purple.
“Her experience on the field, alongside all she will bring off it, will make her a vital component of our Hurricanes list as we continue to find ways to improve," discussed Beams.
Lauren Smith joins Heather Graham, Ruth Johnston, Hayley Silver-Holmes, Amy Smith, Molly Strano and Rachel Trenaman as Hurricanes players under contract ahead of WBBL|10 as new signings and re-signings continue to be announced over the coming weeks.
Details on Hurricanes memberships will be communicated to Hurricanes members over the next month.
