Scorchers turn up the Heat against Hurricanes

It was the perfect spring day to kick of the Weber WBBL|09 season at the University of Tasmania stadium.

The first match saw the debut for four Hurricanes players with Shabnim Ismail, Bryony Smith, Hayley Silver-Holmes and Tabatha Saville.

The Hurricanes found themselves missing two key starting members of the Squad with Captain Elyse Villani being out with illness, and Nicola Carey being unavailable due to injury.

Announced as Captain for the match, Heather Graham won the toss, and made the decision to bowl first.

It paid off early for the ‘Canes with Lizelle Lee stumping Beth Mooney in the third over, to leave the scorers 1-25.

By the 7th over the Scorchers were 3- 52 and things were looking up for the ‘Canes in the first half of the innings.

But it was Sophie Devine who took control for Perth smashing 87* making her the leading run scorer for the round of matches.

The Hurricanes needed 187 to win, but it was a disastrous start for the girls in purple with opening batter Lizelle Lee dismissed for a duck.

Heather Graham also found herself out for a duck by the end of the first over, and things were looking dire for the Hurricanes.

The pain continued as they sat at 4-19 by the 4th over, but it was the unlikely pairing of Molly Strano and Ruth Johnston that gave the Hurricanes a glimpse of hope.

By the 10th over, the ‘Canes were 4-59, and after the departure of Ruth Johnston it all began to crumble.

A notable mention to Strano who finished up on 37 runs, but it wasn’t enough to get the Hurricanes to the total required as they finished up all out on 88 runs.
