Draft Recap: Hurricanes Haul

Following the completion of the WBBL|11 and BBL|15 Drafts, the Hobart Hurricanes can confirm their draft hauls.

Under the Overseas Pre-Signing rule, the Hurricanes have Nat Sciver-Brunt and Chris Jordan already locked away as part of their squads, maintaining an English flavour in either team.

Chris Jordan was a key component of the Hurricanes BBL|14 Title win, bowling the key overs in the powerplay and power surge, while chipping in at the backend of their batting innings with his power hitting, and a terrific outfielder.

He was our first pick in this year’s BBL|15 Draft at Pick #6, noting our pre-signing needed to be made in the first or second round to ensure Jordan’s value as a Platinum pick.

Our second-round pick was Bangladeshi leg-spinner Rishad Hossain, who would be familiar to Hurricanes fans after being drafted last year in the BBL|14 draft but was unable to participate due to commitments with the Bangladesh Premier League.

The 22-year-old burst onto the world stage in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup for Bangladesh, taking 14 wickets in his seven matches for the Tigers, only 12 months after making his debut.

In the third round, the Hurricanes passed, knowing they could use their fourth-round pick to select their third and final overseas pick for BBL|15.

The Hurricanes final pick is young English leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed who made his test debut for England in 2022 as an 18-year-old and was the sixth youngest cricketer in history to take a five-wicket haul.

A talented lower-order batter, Ahmed has full availability for BBL|15 and will play a key role for the Hurricanes with the ball.

In the WBBL Draft, the Hurricanes' first selection was recently announced as pre-signing, Nat Sciver-Brunt, who will add world-class experience to their top-order batting line-up.

Her bowling will also be a key factor, with her crafty medium pace taking wickets across international cricket.

Joining Sciver-Brunt is fellow England teammate Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who was a key factor in the Hurricanes' top-order in their run through to the Finals for the first time in two seasons.

She was retained by the Hurricanes, and despite only playing in seven games last season, had a top score of 62 and will be available for the full tournament this summer.

The Hurricanes' third and final round pick was another English player, this time left-arm spinner Linsey Smith joining her international teammates to play for the Hobart Hurricanes for the first time.

Smith recently played for England in their most recent series against the West Indies, and took 5/36 in a WODI match, and has played for the Melbourne Stars, Sydney Sixers, and Melbourne Renegades in previous seasons.

Their fourth-round pick was a pass knowing they had already made three picks in the prior rounds.

The current Hurricanes squads are as follows:
