Xavier Doherty Umpire Ambassador

30 July 2018

Cricket Tasmania is proud to announce the appointment of former Australian, Tasmanian and Hobart Hurricanes cricketer Xavier Doherty as an Umpire Ambassador for Season 2018/19.

Xavier is one of the most admired Tasmanian cricketers to have played the game and was held in great respect by all match officials.

He is delighted to be able to assist in the recruitment of new umpires for Cricket Tasmania.

“I always enjoyed a very good relationship with umpires throughout my career, so I'm only too happy to assist Cricket Tasmania's umpire recruiting strategy,” Doherty said.

“In particular, we are looking to attract more females to become part of the umpiring fraternity.

"It’s great to see so many girls now turning to cricket, and we hope to see just as many of them also take up umpiring.”

The Cricket Tasmania Match Officials Department has officially commenced its annual recruiting phase for new umpires and is currently promoting its free training course which starts this Monday evening 6 August.

Match Officials Manager Gerry O’Dea believes it's never been easier to get into umpiring with Cricket Tasmania’s free umpire training sessions.

“Cricket umpiring is the best seat in the house and you get paid tax-free to perform a valuable community service," O'Dea said.

"Plus you get to be part of a great team and we will provide all the training you need."

Not only are Cricket Tasmania looking to recruit more female umpires, they are also focused on providing training opportunities to young people and those from multicultural backgrounds.

"We know there are lots of cricket lovers in the community – we just need them to understand how rewarding cricket umpiring can be and come and have a try," O'Dea said.

Cricket Tasmania currently has two umpires on the Cricket Australia National Panel - Sam Nogajski and Mike Graham-Smith, both from Hobart.

“It’s a fantastic past-time and weekend career - very rewarding, challenging and lots of fun as part of the 'engine room' of a game,” Doherty added.
