The Hobart Hurricanes’ English contingent has been strengthened, with English international Lauren Winfield signing on as the Hurricanes’ second international player for WBBL|03.
After two seasons with the Brisbane Heat, Winfield said she hoped a strong English flavor to both Hobart teams would mean support from back home was strong.
“It’s great that we’ve signed Tom Curran and Tymal Mills for the BBL, so hopefully the fans back home in England can really get behind us and the Hurricanes,” she said.
“Hopefully we’re well-supported in Tasmania as well.”
Winfield said she enjoys coming to Australia, where conditions are generally more friendly for batsman than they are back in the UK.
“The conditions in Australia are very different to England – the ball doesn’t tend to move laterally as much and as a batter that’s something I’m really looking forward to,” she said.
“The surfaces are pretty flat with good bounce and carry so as a batter that’s something I’m looking forward to.”
Winfield is currently playing with England in the women’s Ashes series.
Hurricanes WBBL coach Julia Price said Winfield, who has played 34 ODI’s and 18 T20I’s for England, would be a welcome addition to the lineup.
“She was very keen and really excited when we approached her and she got a great endorsement from Heather Knight which was good enough for us,” she said.
“Lauren will bat in the top three for us and she’s a terrific fielder as well.
“We’re really excited to see what she can provide for the Hurricanes in the T20 format.”
It has also been confirmed that Heather Knight will not take part in the WBBL this season, with a foot injury she sustained at the World Cup needing time to heal.
The English and Wales Cricket Board have said that Knight’s injury can be managed through the women’s Ashes series, but the period immediately after the series has been identified as an opportunity for recuperation.
Knight will still be part of the Hurricanes’ WBBL campaign however, playing a mentoring role for the first half of the tournament.
“Heather’s experience is invaluable to the group and she is part of the Hurricanes family, so I had no hesitation in approaching her about the role,” Price said.
