Match Preview - Hurricanes v Thunder

08 January 2017

It's do-or-die for both sides at Blundstone Arena tonight.

Beloved Canes supporters – it’s officially crunch time. With our season in the balance and a packed out Blundstone Arena resplendent in purple, the Hobart Hurricanes are fronting up for a must-win clash with last year’s BBL champions, the Sydney Thunder. The Canes were unable to secure victory against the Strikers earlier this week but, like a herd of cows at altitude, the stakes have never been higher than they are tonight. It’s purple v lime green and we are ready for the biggest BBL match Blundstone Arena has seen in years. With that in mind, the humble crew at Hurricanes HQ has put on its statistician’s hat to offer you the preview of tonight’s all-or-nothing showdown.

Average Batting Innings – 133.8

Average RR – 6.69

Average Wickets taken in innings – 6.7

Take heart, Canes Fans. Despite the Thunder’s remarkable championship last season, they have never defeated the Hurricanes in an official BBL fixture, having lost 5 consecutive games to the purple army. Bowlers have dominated these clashes in the past, with stats showing a higher wicket ratio and lower RR but heavy hitters such as Ben Dunk and Mike Hussey have proven otherwise with knocks of 96 and 71 respectively. The Thunder will be in ominous form after putting championship contenders Melbourne Stars to the sword but history tells no lies and the visitors will surely be wary of their poor track record against the Hurricanes. Will the Canes continue their winning streak or will the Thunder break the trend and save their season?

One of our most treasured and decorated Hurricanes, Jon Wells played a crucial knock against the Strikers last Friday, stroking a collected half-century and combining for a massive partnership with debutant Beau Webster. With a number of BBL fifties to his name and a vocal home crowd beckoning, Wellsy will be chomping at the bit to make another score at his Bellerive stomping ground.

One of the world’s most entertaining T20 players, West Indies star Carlos Brathwaite will be out to make his mark on BBL|06 with both bath and ball in his Thunder debut at Blundstone Arena. A World T20 World Cup winner, Carlos has the ability to conjure runs from thin air and will look to put pressure on the Hurricanes spin trio of Boyce, Rose and Webster with his excellent footwork and power hitting.

What’s next?

Next up, the Hurricanes fly to Melbourne ahead of their clash with the Renegades at Etihad Stadium before returning to Blundstone Arena and hosting the Perth Scorchers in their final regular season BBL|06 fixture.
