A rising star of Tasmanian cricket has become a Hobart Hurricane, with Riley Meredith joining the squad for BBL|07.
The Clarence product has burst onto the domestic cricket scene this season, playing for Tasmania during the JLT One-Day Cup and making his Sheffield Shield debut against Victoria at the MCG.
The 21-year-old said it was a thrill to be playing a part in the Big Bash this season.
“I’m really excited, hopefully I can train hard and look to get a game at some stage throughout the tournament,” he said.
With international signings Tymal Mills and Jofra Archer likely to play as primary bowling options and several other local players pushing to form part of the Hurricanes bowling attack, Meredith is unsure where he currently stands in the squad.
“I’m not too sure where I sit in the pecking order yet, I’ll go with the team to Wollongong and Traralgon next week for a couple of practice games and hopefully have a few good performances to put my hand up,” he said.
“There’s a lot of quicks in the squad with the two internationals as well, but that’s good. That competition is good for the squad and should hold us in good stead throughout the tournament.”
The opportunity to work with Englishman Tymal Mills throughout the Big Bash season is also a lucrative prospect for the 21-year-old.
“Tymal’s a world-class bowler, he was highly sought after in the IPL which is the premier T20 cricket competition in the world so I’m really looking forward to spending six weeks with him and picking his brain,” Meredith said.
“I love coming to watch the Big Bash. The crowds are amazing so I’m really excited to be involved and hopefully get a game.”
Meredith’s signing rounds out the Hurricanes preliminary squad of 18 players, with the squad beginning its preparations for BBL|07 next week.
