Match preview: Heat v Hurricanes

07 January 2022

The Hobart Hurricanes will be looking to return to their winning ways when they take on the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba tomorrow night.

Although the Hurricanes will likely be facing a COVID-decimated Heat side, they will still need to be wary, after going down to a gritty Heat outfit by 14 runs on New Years’ Day.

On that occasion, it was Afghani import, Mujeeb Ur Rahman (3-20 off four overs) and Xavier Bartlett (4-30 off four) who ran riot with the ball on the Hurricanes’ home deck.

The Hurricanes have named 14-player squad for tomorrow's match against the Heat:

Gabe Bell
Tim David
Peter Handscomb (c)
Caleb Jewell
Sandeep Lamichhane
Tom Lammonby
Ben McDermott
Riley Meredith
Mitch Owen
Wil Parker
Tom Rogers
Will Sanders
D'Arcy Short
Mac Wright

Tasmanian Tigers bowler, Gabe Bell, and young Queensland pace bowler, Will Sanders, have been added to the squad to bolster the Hurricanes' bowling stocks.  Both will make their debut in purple if selected in the final XI.

International replacement player, Tom Lammonby, also returns to the squad, after playing for the Hurricanes in their first two matches of KFC BBL|11 against the Sydney Sixers.

Matthew Wade is unavailable for selection due to personal reasons, with Pete Handscomb to take over the captaincy for tomorrow's match.

Scott Boland (international commitments), Nathan Ellis (injury), Josh Kann (COVID-19) and Joel Paris (injury) remain unavailable for selection.

Out of an abundance of caution, Harry Brook and Jordan Thompson will also miss tomorrow night's match after spending time in close proximity to a positive COVID-19 case.  So far, both have returned negative PCR tests.

The first ball will be bowled at 8.30pm AEDT tomorrow night, with the match being broadcast on Fox Cricket and SEN 1116, and also available to livestream via Kayo Sports.
