The Hobart Hurricanes have rounded out their playing squad for WBBL|03, with star West Indian Hayley Matthews re-signing with the club.
Matthews was a star with both bat and ball for the Hurricanes last season, claiming a team-high 20 wickets across 14 appearances and hitting 185 runs.
Her 20 wickets also saw her sit third on the list of overall wicket-takers across the competition.
The 19-year-old said she was looking forward to returning to Tasmania this season.
“I’m very excited to be coming back to the Hurricanes this year,” she said.
“I’ve played there for the last two years and the main reason I’m coming back is the bond I have with the team, coaches and everyone down there.”
The Hurricanes will be looking to go one step further in WBBL|03, having been eliminated from the competition in the semi-final stage in both previous seasons.
“It would definitely be a huge motivating factor this year to go one step further – get to the finals and win the whole tournament,” she said.
The squad has seen a reshuffle over the off-season, with Heather Knight unavailable the Hurricanes have turned to fellow Englishwoman Lauren Winfield and Indian Veda Krishnamurthy as international signings alongside Matthews.
“I’ve played a bit against both Lauren and Veda. I think they’re great players and I’m really looking forward to playing alongside them and picking their brains as they’re very experienced,” Matthews said.
Matthews added that she loves the atmosphere that Tasmania provides away from the cricket field.
“I love the food festivals and everything that’s going on around the time of the Big Bash,” she said.
“There’s so much to do and lots of activities, so I’d probably say that’s my favourite part about Tassie.”
The Hurricanes WBBL side head to Launceston for a training camp next week, before kicking off their WBBL|03 campaign against the Adelaide Strikers on December 9.
