Match Preview: Hurricanes v Renegades, Stars

17 January 2022

The pointy end of KFC BBL|11 is fast approaching, with the Hobart Hurricanes gearing up for their final two games of the regular season in Melbourne.

The Hurricanes will face both Melbourne teams in back-to-back matches this Tuesday and Wednesday, at Marvel Stadium and the MCG respectively.

First up, the Hurricanes will face the Melbourne Renegades on Tuesday evening, in their penultimate match of the regular season.  Although the fixture it is a Hurricanes ‘home’ match, the game will be played on the Renegades home turf.  However, if Ben McDermott can repeat his heroics of the two teams’ first meeting, it won’t be an issue for the ‘Canes.

It was on that occasion at Marvel Stadium that McDermott smashed his history-breaking second century of the tournament, notching an incredible 127 runs off just 65 deliveries, to guide his side to a comprehensive 85-run win.

The following evening, the Hurricanes will face the Stars at the MCG, in what is shaping up to be a blockbuster final match of the KFC BBL|11 regular season.  Depending on results earlier in the day, this match could determine both teams’ finals fate, and hence, the Hurricanes will be looking for a repeat of their clinical Christmas Eve victory against the Stars at Blundstone Arena.

It was the now-injured, Nathan Ellis, who was awarded Player of the Match on that occasion, taking the vital wickets of both Joe Burns (22) and West Indian superstar, Andre Russell (12), to guide his team to victory.  However, with a plethora of stellar all-round performances on that occasion from the likes of McDermott (67 runs off 43 deliveries), Matthew Wade (39 off 27), Tom Rogers (3-29 off four overs) and Riley Meredith (3-32 off four) the Hurricanes remain in good hands.

The Hurricanes have named an unchanged squad of 16 from last week’s thrilling nine-run win over the Sydney Thunder ahead of tomorrow’s match against the Renegades:

Gabe Bell
Tim David
Peter Handscomb
Caleb Jewell
Josh Kann
Sandeep Lamichhane
Ben McDermott
Riley Meredith
Mitch Owen
Wil Parker
Tom Rogers
Will Sanders
D'Arcy Short
Jordan Thompson
Matthew Wade (c)
Mac Wright

Gabe Bell will make his Hurricanes debut if selected in the final XI.

Scott Boland, Nathan Ellis, and Joel Paris remain unavailable for selection for tomorrow's match, however the Hurricanes will look to name an new squad ahead of Wednesday’s match against the Stars.

The first ball in Tuesday’s match between the Hurricanes and the Renegades will be bowled at 7.15pm AEDT, with the match available to be broadcast on 7 Cricket, Fox Cricket and SEN 1116.  It will also be available for livestream via Kayo Sports.
