Emily Smith signs, WBBL squad locked in

16 October 2019

The Hobart Hurricanes are excited to announce their final signing for the rebel WBBL|05 season, wicketkeeper Emily Smith.

Smith returns to Tasmania following two years playing for Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers to complete a busy off-season of recruiting from Head Coach Salliann Briggs.

24-year-old Smith featured in 15 matches for the Hurricanes before moving to Perth but in Nicola Carey, Maisy Gibson, Chloe Tryon, Belinda Vakarewa, Tayla Vlaeminck and Fran Wilson there are six new faces expected to debut in purple this weekend at the CitiPower Centre in Melbourne.

Head Coach Salliann Briggs says Smith has been a great addition to the group.

"Emily's a really popular member of our squad and will provide a vocal presence behind the stumps along with her specialist glovework," said Briggs.

"We're really pleased with the group we've been able to assemble for the first-ever standalone WBBL season and we can't wait for the weekend for it to get underway."

Smith enjoyed her time spent in the west but has settled in quickly upon her return to Hobart.

"There are still many familiar faces among the group we have got so it doesn't feel like I was gone long at all, I loved my time in Perth but it's great to be back with the Hurricanes," said Smith.

The Hurricanes' season begins with matches against the Stars at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday, both matches will be live on cricket.com.au and Kayo Sports.

Full Hurricanes WBBL|05 squad: Corinne Hall (Captain), Nicola Carey, Stefanie Daffara, Erin Fazackerley, Katelyn Fryett, Maisy Gibson, Brooke Hepburn, Heather Knight, Hayley Matthews*, Sasha Moloney, Meg Phillips, Emily Smith, Chloe Tryon, Belinda Vakarewa, Tayla Vlaeminck, Frances Wilson.

*Hayley Matthews will be an international replacement player for Heather Knight late in the tournament.
