Hurricanes Sign Local Jewell

16 September 2018

The Hobart Hurricanes are delighted to announce the signing of local player, Caleb Jewell, to a BBL contract for this coming season.

Jewell joins #TasmaniasTeam after making great strides in the Cricket Tasmania Premier League and Hurricanes Academy last summer, impressing Head Coach Adam Griffith and his support staff.

If 21-year-old Jewell appears for the Hurricanes this summer, he will have appeared at the top level domestically in all three formats of the game, adding to his six One-Day appearances and three Sheffield Shield caps.

Jewell is excited with the opportunity to earn his spot in the starting eleven and compete against some of the best short-form cricketers on the planet.

"I'm looking forward to the chance to further develop the skills I learned in the Hurricanes Academy last year while hopefully being able to play among some of the best T20 players in the world," said Jewell.

"I see myself as an aggressive batsman while being adaptable to different situations and where I bat. Hopefully the fans can see the Hurricanes go one step further this summer as our batting line-up is packed with big hitters."

Hurricanes Head Coach, Adam Griffith, says Jewell has more than earned this opportunity and is keen to see how the 'young gun' steps up to the big BBL stage.

"As one of our local, young batsman who has come through the Tasmanian pathway, we are excited to see what Caleb can bring to the Hurricanes this year," said Griffith.

"He made some significant runs in the Hurricanes Academy last year and we are confident he can back that up this year, starting in the UAE in a few weeks' time.

"He is an aggressive top order player who has the ability to get the team off to a quick start. As he continues to develop his game, we see him being able to bat through the middle and later stages of an innings with his impressive power game."

Jewell will travel with the Hurricanes to the Abu Dhabi T20 Tournament at the beginning of October, before vying for a spot in the BBL|08 starting eleven when the season gets underway against the Brisbane Heat at Metricon Stadium on December 22.
