Hurricanes' members and fans will receive more content across Tasmania than ever this summer, with the KFC Big Bash League (BBL) and Rebel Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) released today and the Hurricanes set to hit Blundstone Arena before Christmas.
The WBBL Hurricanes are first to play at Blundstone Arena on Sunday the 17th December when they take on the Sixers, before the men launch into their season against the Renegades on the evening of Thursday the 21st of December.
Hurricanes' fans will be treated to more matches, more venues, and more family-friendly entertainment, presenting the perfect opportunity for the Tasmanian public to embrace the Hobart Hurricanes as Tasmania’s team and their number one club to support.
The BBL regular season has increased to 40 matches, up from 32 matches in BBL|06, in addition to the existing two Semi Finals and the Final. The expansion means that more than 100 BBL and WBBL matches will be played this season. Every match of BBL|07 will be broadcast live on Network Ten and across the Macquarie Radio Network. Across the season, 12 matches of the WBBL will be broadcast on Network Ten, with all remaining matches livestreamed on the CA Live platform.
The expanded competition will see each BBL Club allocated an additional home match per season (moving from four to five) and increase each Club’s regular season fixtures from eight to ten.
This move sees UTAS Stadium in Launceston hosting a double header on the 30th of December which is great news for Northern Tasmanian cricket fans, including Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, Sarah Courtney who is looking forward to showcasing elite sport and inspiring future cricket stars.
“The Hurricanes truly are Tasmania’s team and Launceston is looking forward to a strong summer of cricket, building on the successful WBBL presence in past seasons.”
Cricket Tasmania Chief Executive Nick Cummins said the Hurricanes are excited to be able to finally promote the full fixture to the fans, with the growing popularity of both competitions and the expanded summer something he is confident all Tasmanians will embrace.
“We know the BBL and WBBL are firm family favourites during the summer school holidays as we want them all to support our club and help us surpass last year’s attendances, which nationwide exceeded 1 million for the second consecutive season.
“We want to encourage more people to give cricket a go and experience the atmosphere that is created when the Hurricanes play live in their home state. We know Tasmanians are passionate about their state and the opportunity to take matches to markets such as Launceston is particularly exciting as it represents the growing popularity of the Big Bash nationwide.
“A key cricket strategy is broadening cricket’s fan base and attracting new fans to the sport. We hope to continue to drive participation and become a very accessible club, servicing untapped demand and engaging more first-time fans to experience the Hurricane's story,” Mr Cummins said.
